Hopeless Spark
Four walls painted slate
A book shelf of forgotten books
She lies with her cold coffee
Her cigarette burns its way to her skinny finger
Wrinkles surround her face,
hiding a past, that she’d soon forget
You would see a lost cause, a troubled woman.
But look beyond her unkept hair
Forget her vulgar words of despair
Search for a glimmer of hope
Talk to her of Hemmingway, Picasso, and Nabokov
Ask her to forget her fears, hide her tears
And perhaps today might be a good day
The grayness in her eyes will fade,
As she tells you about her time
When she wore white and held her head tall
When she looked at the world with trust,
and never knew of anything better.
Brokenness is not the natural human condition
It creeps up on us all like time
Like the thief in the streets
It snatches our dreams
And leaves us empty.
(Alternative Ending)
What’s left may be impossible
But Remember a fire only needs a spark
And love only takes an act of compassion
