A Broker for Asia-based companies came to Yap this past week. It's trochus season and he is here to collect. The Marine Resources & Environmental Protection Agency have been closely monitoring the removal of the shells. Shit island (that's what it's called locally here) now smells pretty foul, as that is where the trochus is being off loaded & the sea snails removed. The shells will be sold & made into jewelery, paint, buttons and all sorts of other items.
Mothers, Fathers, daughters, brothers are all joining in on this activity and many can be found diving into the depths of the sea or removing the snail with small metal hooks. The sight of all the shells is beautiful and yet somehow, a little sad.
